I spent this last week (May 13-20, to be exact) in the city of New York.
Here are a few pictures from that trip. (Click to view the full image.)
This is the platform at Buffalo’s Exchange Street station. The place isn’t very big, as you can see…
Business class is in the back half of the café car, which was at the end of the train.
These were the conductors. They were friendly enough.
This was my seat. It was quite comfortable.
I even got my own power outlet, so I was able to keep my netbook charged.
The train stopped in several cities across New York, such as Rochester…
Utica…
…and Amsterdam, on the way to New York.
Non-alcoholic drinks were complimentary…
…but they were short-rounds.
Finally, I reached New York and met up with some friends…
We stayed out in Jamaica, so our use of the Subway was extensive.
Of course, our first stop was Times Square…
And we went back at night…
We also visited Fox News, which occupies several floors of the News Corporation Building…
And while the others wandered the city, I went to go see the new Hayden Planetarium, in the Rose Center for Earth and Space…
Okay, that last one was from the Roosevelt Rotunda, which was seen in the movie Night at the Museum…
Just outside, I met up with another friend, the famous T.J. McCormack, and his wife, Andrea:
Don’t they make a lovely couple? Their little girl, Millie, is just out of frame to the left.
The next day, we met up with T.J. and another friend, Dr. John Tantillo, at a café called the Evergreen, which is located right next to… you guessed it, Fox News.
Tantillo is the one in the hat.
On our last day in the city, we decided to take the Staten Island Ferry:
Which included wonderful views of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island:
And we also visited Ground Zero…
And the small museum they’ve set up there…
These were the ones who never came home…
Finally, I headed back to Buffalo, and saw some remarkable things in the Hudson Valley, which was passed after dark on the way in:
It’s easy to see how Anne McCaffrey imagined Benden Weyr based on these formations…
And there were some cool buildings, too:
Sadly, we were delayed outside Buffalo for nearly an hour because one of the earlier trains had struck and killed a high school student who tried to beat it through a crossing…
So that’s it. Not a whole lot of detail, but plenty of memories, most of which never made it through the camera lens (such as our visit to Dangerfield’s Comedy Club or the Huckabee show)…
