An apology to those who said, “It doesn’t hurt”…

Stardate 65257.8

I owe a bunch of folks an apology.

For the longest time, I resisted insulin therapy for my Type II diabetes because I was afraid of giving myself a shot.  The very thought of it gave me the shakes.

Yet all of the healthcare people I asked said it didn’t hurt, because the needles were so small and so thin that it’s barely noticeable.  Even Dr. Manny Alvarez, of the Fox News Channel’s “Medical A-Team” assured me that insulin shots didn’t hurt.

I guess it just took me a while to convince myself of that.  It was probably the dizziness I’ve been feeling shortly after eating that finally did it.

I’m on Lantus, using the SoloStar pen, tipped with BD Nano needles, which make it easier to face the self-injection anxiety.  Right now, I’m taking only ten units a day, but I suspect that’ll go up over time.

I won’t say it’s totally painless, but it’s not nearly as bad as thought it would be.  The lancets going into my palm hurt more than the shots do…

That’s my opinion, and I’m sticking to it.
